Hands That Bind

ARCHIVAL PRINTS

A Fragmented Body, A Stolen Autonomy

Artist Statement

Hands That Bind delves into the resilience of women amid systemic constraints while confronting the uncertain future of their autonomy. The figure stands tall, radiating strength and defiance, yet the absence of an arm poignantly underscores the gradual erosion of women’s agency. This missing part symbolizes the insidious loss of autonomy, as though fragments of their very being are slipping away under the weight of societal, cultural, and institutional forces.

Draped over her face is a flowing veil—a powerful metaphor for the obscured vision of what lies ahead. It shrouds the future, embodying the uncertainty that surrounds women’s rights. Though delicate and ethereal in appearance, the veil carries the heavy burden of restrictions, serving as both a barrier and a reminder of the challenges yet to be overcome. Yet, the flowing fabric also represents transformation and collective energy—a force of movement that contrasts with the stillness of her incomplete form. It symbolizes the unstoppable momentum of women who resist these constraints, reclaim their power, and demand a future where their rights are safeguarded.

This work compels viewers to confront the fragility of progress and the precarious state of women’s freedoms. Together, the missing arm and the veil form potent symbols—not of submission, but of the enduring struggle to see clearly, reclaim autonomy, and create a future where women’s bodies and choices are fully their own.
