SHERSHOW STUDIOS PRESENTS
Into the Light an exhibition of work by Katherine Allbright.
In March 2020, the world changed. The experiences that were once easily accessible were lost to us in a time of uncertainty.
I spent the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic hiking on Vancouver Island, finding freedom in the forests and coastal landscapes. During this time of fear and uncertainty, I found comfort in the strength and wisdom of the trees. I could feel and almost see the energy and light emanating from their branches that inspired hope, humility, and renewed creativity.
I started to paint and found solace in the sense of control and connection in the process of creation. Severed from my rituals of interaction and distraction, each piece offered an opportunity to step out of crisis into an imaginative space that I could share with other people.
Into the Light explores the elements gathered from nature on my walks – leaves, branches, sticks, and grasses. Each painting begins as an iterative layering of paint and process, regrowth and rebirth until it emerges as a complete expression of the energy that drew me to the object in the first place.
The transformation of each painting from physical to digital formats brings layers of music and movement that expand the story and experience of each painting.
I invite you to linger in this space between what is and what can be, seeing and feeling, the ordinary and extraordinary, the physical and digital, to explore the inner landscape of the imagination.
